Have you ever heard that 90 days after a fog it is supposed to storm (or rain or precipitate)?
Over the past two days we’ve had a doozy of a fog. I was in northwest Iowa both days. The fog yesterday was very dense until mid-afternoon letting up just briefly for a sunny period before setting in again. Today (January 19th) the fog wasn’t quite as dense, but it still had a definite presence. On both days, when stopping at an intersection, I had to “roll” the car windows down to listen for traffic before proceeding through the intersection.
Back to the 90 day thing…it seems like just about every time we get major precipitation, Bill reminds me that 90 days prior, we had a dense fog. Maybe it is an old wives’ tale. One TV news video * seems to report that there really isn’t any truth to the 90-day saying. However, it will be interesting to make note of the weather around Arpil 18 and 19 (90 days from yesterday and today) to see if the saying holds true.

Jeff: Good idea. I just used the online reference service for our local library to ask about the April weather. Just another example of how much libraries help us out. When I hear back from the library (which they try to do within two days unless given an earlier deadline) I’ll post the Farmers’ Almanac April forecast (unless someone else posts it before I get the info).

Below is the email response from the Perry Public Library. This response is in reference to my question today about April 2010 weather. As in, if the Farmers’ Almanac predicts precipitation 90 days after our fog that was yesterday and the day before.
The reference librarian wrote:
“I looked up the weather for the 16 to the 21st of April 2010 for you. For the section of the U.S. named “The Heartland Section” (including central and NW Iowa) the weather report is for thunderstorms, then sunny and cool.
“So, I assume the thunderstorms would be at the front end of those dates. Incidentally, I have also heard of precipitation events 90 days after fog. I think it is getting quite a following.”

I’m tired of the fog. We haven’t seen the sun for days. As Annie sang, “Tomorrow, Tomorrow, The sun will come out tomorrow.” Tomorrow can’t come soon enough.

We had quite a foggy March (Saskatchewan) Well, here it is early June and it has rained almost every day. I say the 90 day rule is fairly accurate.

Interesting, LB. Thanks for your comment. It is amazing how, when we’ve had a rainy spell, we check back 90 days and realize there was a memorable fog at that time.
